ARGENTINA
The OAS/REDHUCYT has been supporting Argentina, through the Secretariat for Science and Technology (SECyT)
of that country, to optimize the operation and efficiency of the
Science and Technology Network (RECYT). At present, RECYT has several nodes located
throughout the country which are estimated to serve several thousand users. After SECyT's
connection to Internet through TELINTAR, the national PTT Internet provider, the
Argentinean Network has had an explosive growth.
RedHUCyT also provided high-tech equipment to the Argentinean Teleinformatics Network (RETINA), which connects to the
Internet through a separate satellite link via PanAmSat to Homestead, Florida. The
National Nuclear Energy Commission (CNEA) is one of RETINA´s main users. In 1997,
RedHUCyT provided significant funds for the expansion of RETINA, particularly for the
purchase of a high-capacity router, that will facilitate the interconnection of more
institutions to the network.

BRAZIL
In 1991, the First Inter-American Networking Workshop was
coordinated between RedHUCyT and National Research
Council/National Research Network (CNPq/RNP) of Brazil, and supported by many agencies
and organizations.
In 1998 RedHUCyT in cooperation with RNP cosponsored the Workshop
en Tecnologias de Redes Internet para America Latina (WALC'98.) This event
was cosponsored with the Internet Society, and it was the first event of its
kind in Latin America. RedHUCyT sponsored the participants from
Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, El
Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and
Venezuela. Among other activities, information professionals from the
Region learned new methods and techniques for Internet Networking
Administration. This Workshop further developed cooperation and integration
of existing networks in Latin America and the Caribbean.
With the support of the Ministry of Science and
Technology, RNP is currently undergoing a major expansion phase to build an
Internet t backbone RNP2 to address New Generation Internet applications and
services. A new program on Information Society in Brazil was also
recently approved by the Government .

CHILE
In
1999 the INFOCyT project expanded its activities in the region with the
inclusion of El Salvador to the list of countries that host the system.
Currently INFOCyT is present in four countries: Chile, El Salvador,
Guatemala and the United States.
Another
important event was the realization of another Consultation Meeting on July
13-14, 1999. This year’s Consultation Meeting was held in Guatemala City,
Guatemala. Experts on information systems and other participants evaluated
alternatives for the improvement and expansion of INFOCyT and the
coordination of INFOCyT’s activities with that of other regional
information systems.

Recently, RedHUCyT reached an agreement with the Council for Science and Technology
(CONICYT) of Chile to assist in the expansion of INFOCyT, Phase
II, which is a system sponsored by RedHUCyT, that facilitates the access to scientific and
technological regional information through Internet. The agreement with
CONICYT will
expedite the interaction between the national councils of science and technology of the
region and to develop subregional information systems on science and technology.
In September, 1994, RedHUCyT cosponsored the VI Forum of Latin American and Caribbean Networks to train networking
experts. This event was organized by the National University Network of Chile, REUNA in December, 1996. RedHUCyT had
previously cosponsored the National University Network Seminar - REUNA '94 - which took
place in September 1994. Experts from more than 20 universities affiliated to REUNA
participated in this seminar to update their technical expertise through intensive
training. Experts from the Mercosur countries were invited to strengthen the regional
integration of electronic networks.
In addition, UNIRED, another important association of Chilean
universities, including the Catholic University of Chile, provided technical support for
the development of regional projects, specifically for the Bolivian Data Network (BOLNET)
and to evaluate the possibility of connecting Paraguay to the Internet.

PARAGUAY
In Paraguay, a major project was implemented in order to connect the National University of Asuncion (UNA), the
Catholic University of Asuncion (UCA), some government institutions, and other
organizations to Internet. The OAS/RedHUCyT provided a ground station for satellite
communications, as well as high-tech communications equipment. The connection was
completed on April 9, 1996, consolidating the connection of the MERCOSUR member countries
to Internet.

URUGUAY
In Uruguay, basic equipment was provided to the Technological Laboratory of Uruguay (LATU) to facilitate its connection to
Internet through the University of the Republic. Also, through other OAS projects, support
was given to the National Institute of Agricultural Research (INIA) to implement the Regional Network for Information on
Agricultural Research in the Southern Cone a regional consulting service with
data bases with information about researchers, publications and projects on agriculture. |
