The Office of
Science and Technology (OST) of the Organization of American States (OAS) is
implementing a
Project in Hemispheric Cooperation in the Development of
Science and Technology Policy approved by the Member States of the OAS
in the Special Meeting of the Inter-American Committee on Science and
Technology (COMCYT) held in Lima, Peru from May 5-9, 2003. The Project's
main objective is to generate science and technology policies and strategies
for the Americas in the priority areas defined by the COMCYT
The Project will
bring together, through specialized workshops, distinguished science and
technology experts and policy makers, for an exchange of views on technical
questions and the formulation of science and technology policies for the
Americas. The main objective of each workshop is to propose policies in each
of the priority areas.
The project has five components, the first four of which respond to the
following COMCYT-defined priority areas and a fifth
component on consolidation:
1.Science, Technology and
Innovation to Increase Competitiveness in the Productive
Sector;
coordinated by Argentina, November 17-19, 2003
2.Scientific
and Technological Development in the Americas, coordinated by
Ecuador, December 10-12, 2003.
3. Science and Technology for Social Development;
coordinated by Jamaica, March, 3 - 5 2004.
4.Popularization of Science, coordinated by Brazil,
February, 2 - 5, 2004
5.Consolidation of Hemispheric Policies in Science and
Technology coordinated by Panama, March 8-9, 2004
To facilitate the exchange of information and
the development of the Workshops, the OST has prepared a
Virtual Meeting Room that will be accessible both to the experts and
the delegates of COMCYT. It will allow them to:
♠ Discuss and approve the work agenda of each
component
♠ Propose general policy guidelines in the
specific area
♠ Develop working documents to organize the
Workshops
♠ Disseminate the policies agreed in the
Workshops
