Internet2 Virtual Briefing

"The Future of Network Security: Examining the Issues from Networking 2003”

Internet2 Virtual Briefing on Thursday, May 22. Scheduled for 1:00pm-2:30pm EDT (17.00-18.30 UTC), the May Briefing will include remarks on cybersecurity and cybertrust by Peter Freeman, assistant director of the National Science Foundation and head of the Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) Directorate. Portions of taped comments by Nancy Wong, director of the Office of Planning and Partnerships in the Department of Homeland Security, and Richard Marshall, deputy director, Office of Planning and Partnerships, United States Department of Homeland Security, from the recent EDUCAUSE NET2003 conference will be included as well (http://www.educause.edu/conference/networking/2003/). Mike Roberts and Gary Bachula from Internet2 will discuss current higher education network security initiatives and provide commentary on key issues raised by the speakers.

American Society for Microbiology Pan-American Health Organization

 Fellowship for Latin America

The American Society for Microbiology is accepting applications for the 2003 ASM International Fellowship Program. The goal of this ASM Program is to encourage research and training collaborations in microbiological sciences. Applicants must be researchers from Bolivia, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, or Peru, holders of Masters, PhD, or other equivalent academic degrees, and with at least five years of laboratory experience in the area of bacterial resistance to antimicrobials.

Deadline: April 15 and October 15, 2003

The Canon National Parks Science Scholars Program, the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the US National Park Service will be awarding eight US$78,000 scholarships for Ph.D. students throughout the Americas to conduct research for the conservation of national parks of the region.

Second Workshop on Internet Networking Technologies for Latin America

As part of the activities of the Annual Meeting of Internet Society (INET'98), the Second Workshop on Internet Networking Technologies for Latin America and the Caribbean will be held in Mérida, Venezuela on June 13-18, 1999. The main objective of the Workshop is to facilitate training of network managers on the latest available information technologies and networking. RedHUCyT is providing significant resources to finance the participation of network managers from the region.

Results of the Consultation Meeting of INFOCyT

Within the framework of RedHUCyT, a Consultation Meeting of the INFOCyT Project was held in Santiago, Chile, on April 23-25 1998. The meeting was sponsored by RedHUCyT and co-organized by the Scientific and Technological National Commission of Chile (CONICYT). Diverse experts on information systems and databases participated in the meeting and evaluated alternatives for the expansion of INFOCyT and possible coordination with other regional information systems.

INFOCyT facilitates the access to regional data bases by using a common webpage with pointers provided by the national networks of each country and organized by subjects. These subjects include researchers, fellowship opportunities, cooperative agreements, and other scientific and technological regional information.

Demonstration of INFOCyT Project in Chile

In coordination with the Scientific and Technological National Commission of Chile (CONICYT) in Chile, RedHUCyT provided a demonstration of the INFOCyT project during the exhibition "Information and Communications Technology: Strengthening the Hemisphere for the 21st Century", held in Santiago on April 16-18, 1998, in parallel to the II Summit of the Americas.
