INFOCYT

Latin America and Caribbean Technological Information

A Pilot Program Workshop was organized by RedHUCyT for the introduction of scientific and technological data bases through Internet. It was held in Santiago, Chile in September 1994, with the participation of networking and information systems experts from Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica, Chile, Mexico, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela.

The main objective of the workshop was to develop a system to facilitate the access to scientific and technological regional information through Internet. The system INFOCyT, originally implemented by the Peruvian Scientific Network (RCP), facilitates the access to regional data bases by using a common webpage with pointers provided by the national networks of each country and organized by subjects. These subjects include researchers, fellowship opportunities, cooperative agreements, and other scientific and technological regional information.

Recently, RedHUCyT reached an agreement with the Scientific and Technological National Commission (CONICYT) of Chile to assist in the expansion of INFOCyT, Phase II, facilitating the interaction between the national councils of science and technology of the region and to develop subregional information systems on science and technology. A Consultation Meeting was held in Santiago on April 23-25, 1998, where diverse experts on information systems and databases participated and evaluated alternatives for the expansion of INFOCyT, as well as possible coordination with other regional information systems. Details about the Consultation Meeting (in Spanish), Results (in Spanish).
