RedHUCyT has sponsored and co-organized several seminars and workshops in Latin America and the Caribbean to promote knowledge and experience of electronic communications networks: First
Network Technology Workshop - RUDAC The OAS through the Hemisphere Wide Inter-University Scientific and Technological Network - RedHUCyT sponsored the First Network Technology Workshop of the Red Universitaria Dominicana Académica y Científica (RUDAC), in the Dominican Republic. The four-day workshop was held on September 20-23, in the Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM) in Santo Domingo. The Network Startup Resource Center (NSRC) of the University of Oregon provided technical assistance, and the instructors to the workshop. CISCO Systems and O’Reilly & Associates also sponsored this event. CISCO Systems lent routers, and O’Reilly & Associates donated about 300 books that were distributed among the participants. Consultation Meeting The Second INFOCYT Consultation Meeting was held in Guatemala City on July 13-14, 1999, and provided an opportunity to review the goals set in the First Meeting, last year in Santiago, Chile and evaluate the progress of the INFOCYT project. The meeting also served to plan the expansion of INFOCYT phase II to other countries in the region and to coordinate with other Internet based projects on Science and Technology. Representatives of OAS and the MERCOCYT, RICYT and INFOCYT projects as well as representatives from Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Guatemala, Venezuela and El Salvador were present at the two-day meeting. Results of the Meeting - Meeting Agenda (in Spanish) Second Workshop of Internet Networking Technologies for Latin America RedHUCyT co-sponsored with the Internet Society (ISOC) and the Forum of Latin-American and Caribbean Networks (ENRED), the Second Workshop of Internet Networking Technologies that took place in Mérida on June 14-19, 1999. As in previous years, this workshop trained professionals from Latin America and the Caribbean, in the Design, Operation and Maintenance of Internet Networks. Hundreds of participants from past workshops have played a vital role in developing networks and starting Internet connections in their countries of origin. In this year's event a new group of professionals in the networking field was instructed on the theoretical and practical aspects of planning, establishing, and managing the infrastructure of domestic and national networks. Technology for Latin America an the Caribbean - WALC '98 RedHUCyT co-sponsored with the Brazilian national research network Rede National de Pesquisa (RNP), the Workshop em Tecnologia de Redes para America Latina e Caribe, (WALC ’98) in the city of Rio de Janeiro on July 13-18 of 1998. The event, first in this kind, was co-sponsored by the Internet Society. RedHUCyT sponsored participants from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela. Among others activities the IT professionals from the region were exposed to methods and techniques of network administration and the Internet. Each participant in his or her own country will replicate the material learned. This workshop fostered development, integration and cooperation of existent networks in Latin America and the Caribbean. Consultation Meeting of the INFOCyT project (in Spanish) Within the framework of RedHUCyT, a Consultation Meeting of the INFOCyT Project was held in Santiago, Chile, on April 23-25 1998. The meeting was sponsored by RedHUCyT and co-organized by the Scientific and Technological National Commission of Chile (CONICYT). Diverse experts on information systems and databases participated in the meeting and evaluated alternatives for the expansion of INFOCyT and possible coordination with other regional information systems. INFOCyT facilitates the access to regional data bases by using a common webpage with pointers provided by the national networks of each country and organized by subjects. These subjects include researchers, fellowship opportunities, cooperative agreements, and other scientific and technological regional information. Demonstration of INFOCyT Project in Chile In coordination with the Scientific and Technological National Commission of Chile (CONICYT) in Chile, RedHUCyT provided a demonstration of the INFOCyT project during the exhibition "Information and Communications Technology: Strengthening the Hemisphere for the 21st Century", held in Santiago on April 16-18, 1998, in parallel to the II Summit of the Americas . International Event Visionarios'98 The National Academic Network of Venezuela, (REACCIUN), hosted an international meeting, Visionarios'98, held in Caracas, on April 22-24, 1998. Several participants exchanged experiences and visions about the impact of new information technologies on the economic, social, political and academic development of the region. RedHUCyT financed the participation of some key international speakers. International Meeting on Health Crisis and Internet The OAS/RedHUCyT cosponsored the International Meeting on Health Crisis and Internet, held in Bogota, Colombia on November 18-21, 1997. The meeting facilitated the exchange of information about using the Internet for preparedness planning, strategic decision-making, and operational coordination of health crises. The Meeting was organized and sponsored by the Pan American Health Organization, the World Health Organization, and the Ministry of Health of Colombia. RedHUCyT financed the participation of some experts of the region as speakers. III Latin American Schools of Networks - ESLARED In collaboration with the University of the Andes and the National Council for Science and Technology (CONICIT), RedHUCyT cosponsored the III Latin American School of Networks - ESLARED, facilitating the participation of network managers from the region in training workshops. The III ESLARED was held in Merida, Venezuela, in November, 1997, and provided participants with the necessary expertise on networking, advanced information technologies, and hardware configuration. Symposium "Internet in the Americas" RedHUCyT cosponsored a Symposium about Internet in the Americas, held during the Fifth Chemical Congress of North America, in Cancun, Mexico, on November 11-15, 1997. The Symposium facilitated the evaluation of the current status of Internet development in the region and the use of information technologies among scientists, particularly in the area of Chemistry. I Central American Seminar on Internet Security In collaboration with the National Council of Science and Technology (CONCYT) of Guatemala, RedHUCyT sponsored the I Central American Seminar on Internet Security, held in Guatemala on May 27-28, 1997. RedHUCyT financed the attendance of network managers from Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama as well as the participation of instructors from Mexico and Spain. The Seminar advanced several legal and technical issues on Internet security. Schools Internet Workshop, Belize RedHUCyT sponsored a Schools Internet Workshop at the Corozal Community College in Belize, on March 1997, with the collaboration of the Belize Telecommunications Limited (BTL) and the University College of Belize (UCB). During the workshop, several network managers received hands-on training on computers and telecommunications, including configuration of hardware and software programming. VI Forum of Academic Networks for Latin America and the Caribbean In December 1996, RedHUCyT cosponsored the VI Forum of Academic Networks for Latin America and the Caribbean, and provided financial resources to support the participation of experts in diverse training workshops, as well as for the instructors. The event was organized by the National University Network of Chile REUNA, in Santiago. These hands-on workshops facilitated the training of network managers on router configuration and maintenance and the design, planning and management of electronic networks and Internet services. Also, the participants agreed to create an Association of Networks by establishing a pro-tempore Executive Committee to follow up these activities. The Committee will publish an invitation to join the Association. V Forum of Academic Networks for Latin America and the Caribbean The V Forum of Academic Networks for Latin America and the Caribbean, was organized by the Peruvian Scientific Network (RCP) and cosponsored by OAS/RedHUCyT, in Lima, Peru, in April 1996. Representatives of most of the academic networks and information systems of the region participated in this forum. In particular, a special workshop on strategic planning of the Internet was held with the objective of evaluating issues of common interest as well as formalizing the Forum. IV Forum of Academic Networks for Latin America and the Caribbean, organized by the Secretariat of Science and Technology (SECYT) in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in November 1994. Representatives from many academic networks from the region participated in the forum to evaluate the situation of the networks in their countries and design subregional projects. The Seminar of the National University Network of Chile - REUNA'94, organized by National University Network (REUNA) of Chile and cosponsored by RedHUCyT in Santiago, Chile, in September, 1994. More than 400 networking experts from Chile and the MERCOSUR member countries participated in the seminar. In parallel, a Pilot Program Workshop about the introduction of regional scientific and technological data bases (INFOCyT) through Internet was held in Santiago, Chile with the participation of experts from the National Councils of Science and Technology from Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica, Chile, Mexico, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela. The III Forum of Academic Networks for Latin America and the Caribbean organized by CONICYT in Caracas, Venezuela in October 1993. Latin American Schools of Networks - ESLARED RedHUCyT cosponsored two Latin American School on Networks (ESLARED). These Schools facilitate the training of network managers from the region in the latest available communications hardware and software. The III ESLARED will be held in the University of the Andes (ULA) in Merida, Venezuela. The former Schools were held in Merida, Venezuela in 1992 and 1995. Also, in Lima, Peru, RedHUCyT sponsored a similar Workshop for Network Managers, in 1993. The Second Latin American and Caribbean Workshop on Academic Networks convened by the National Science and Technology Council (CONACyT) of Mexico, was held in Guadalajara, Mexico, in December 1992, and sponsored by the OAS and other organizations. It was attended by close to 60 participants representing many of the networks established in Latin America and the Caribbean. The Second Caribbean Academic and Scientific Network Workshop was held in March 1993 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. It was financed and co-organized through the RedHUCyT initiative in cooperation with the University of Puerto Rico and CRACIN, and attended by some 20 participants from the Caribbean region. The First Caribbean Academic and Scientific Network Workshop, organized in conjunction with the University of Puerto Rico and the Academic and Scientific Network Corporation (CRACIN) of Puerto Rico, during which a sub-project to establish an electronic information network linking Caribbean universities was launched, labeled CUNet. The First Inter-American Networking Workshop, which was prepared in cooperation with the Scientific Research Council (CNPq/RNP) of Brazil and supported by many agencies and organizations. This Forum is considered as one of the first activities that promoted the attractiveness in developing Internet in the region. RedHUCyT also supported Latin American and Caribbean experts to participate in the Internet Society's annual meetings, INET: Denmark, 1991; Japan, 1992; and the United States, 1993. |
